Photo Session With Hailey Howard

The challenge on this photo session was to eventually end up getting great images at sunset in a great location. However, there were plenty of images to be captured prior to that short time window.

Working with Hailey and her mom, we started off behind a barn sheltered from the direct sunlight. Balancing my off camera flash for that scenario we focused on those rustic barn shots in jean shorts and a halter.

After that, we transitioned over to a black dress as the sun began to go down against the white fence railings. We got some really good cloud arrangements and some not so good that had to be swapped out in a sky replacement. I loved the arrangement of the wardrobe here and angling to offset the direct sun for some creative angles. We captured some really nice lower angle images here.

Then, it was off for a little bit of a hike. Not a big hike, but when you are your own assistant and you carry all the gear, it can be a pain in the behind. We headed up the hill to a solitary tree overlooking the barn complex and the sunset. Once I figured out the angle I wanted, all we had to deal with was some fairly strong winds. However, I think the combination of the model, sunset, the winds, wardrobe, location and angle made these specific captures, the best of the lot.

After shooting here until the sun dipped below the horizon, we were so jazzed up, we didn’t want the session to be over so we headed off towards the creek to see if we could salvage a few more shots before it was completely dark. Now, granted, the shots were a struggle and it got too dark for the light setup I had, but I think we got a few more decent shots in the back of a pickup. The ones by the creek truly were too dark and noisy, but I posted a couple just because we put in the effort to try to capture something.

Overall it was a great session. I met a new model and her mom and we got some great images.

We are submitting these for publication, so we will see if more comes of this photo session after all.
